What Is a Bamboo T Shirt? Printing and Buying Guide

What a bamboo t shirt is made of, how it compares with cotton and tri blend, how to print on bamboo blanks and labeling basics.

Most bamboo t shirts are rayon or viscose made from bamboo, sometimes blended. Read the fiber line, test every decoration method on the blank and keep labels accurate.

What is a bamboo t shirt? Most bamboo t shirts are made from rayon, also called viscose, that was produced using bamboo as the plant source, and some blanks blend it with other fibers. For decorators, that means treating the shirt as a regenerated cellulose fabric: read the fiber line, then test every decoration method on the blank before you quote a run.

Definition: rayon is a manufactured fiber made from regenerated cellulose. Bamboo can be the cellulose source, but the finished fiber is rayon or viscose. Fabric made directly from bamboo fiber, often called mechanically processed bamboo, is a different and much less common material.

What Is a Bamboo T Shirt Made Of

US and Canadian regulators both describe most bamboo textiles as rayon or viscose made from bamboo. The US Federal Trade Commission says most, if not all, bamboo textile products are really rayon, and that rayon and viscose are the same thing. Canada describes rayon from the viscose process as viscose.

Spec sheets may list the fiber as rayon from bamboo, viscose from bamboo or a percentage of either, and some blanks blend that fiber with cotton, polyester or spandex. Each fiber changes how inks, films and heat behave, so the full fiber breakdown matters more than the word bamboo on the hangtag.

Bamboo vs Cotton vs Tri Blend

FabricFiber typeDecorating notes
Bamboo (rayon or viscose from bamboo)Regenerated cellulose, a manufactured fiberCheck the hand on a sample; discharge does not act on rayon; sublimation does not bond; test press heat
CottonNatural cellulose fiberWide method fit; see Polyester vs Cotton T Shirts
Tri blendPolyester, cotton and rayonCovered on the tri blend page; poly share adds dye migration risk

Hand feel varies by blend, knit and finish, so compare a decorated sample with an undecorated blank before you quote. Fiber choice in general is covered in Polyester vs Cotton T Shirts, and tri blends have their own page: Tri Blend Shirts Printing.

Printing and Decorating Bamboo Blanks

There is no single bamboo setting. Fiber content, knit and finish all vary, so the honest rule is test on the blank. Use the table as a list of questions to answer on a sample, not as approved settings.

MethodWhat to knowTest on the blank
Screen print, plastisol or soft hand inkInk type and film thickness change the hand; test on the blankPrint, cure per ink maker, stretch and wash a sample
Screen print, water based or dischargeDischarge acts on cotton, not on rayon or polyester, so results vary with fiber shareRun a discharge test before you promise color on dark blanks

SublimationSublimation bonds to polyester, not to rayonOnly consider it if the blank has a high polyester share

Labeling and Marketing Claims

General information, not legal advice. Labeling rules vary by country and change over time; confirm with the regulator or a qualified advisor before you label or advertise a product.

Fiber naming is regulated in some countries. In the US, the FTC says a textile can be called bamboo only if it is made directly from bamboo fiber; rayon or viscose made from bamboo should be labeled and advertised with the generic fiber name, such as rayon made from bamboo. Canada guidance takes a similar approach, giving examples such as rayon from bamboo and viscose from bamboo.

Regulators also expect every claim about a textile to be truthful and substantiated, including claims about the fiber or its properties. That is why this guide makes no environmental or performance claims for bamboo fabric. If you resell or private label bamboo blanks, use the fiber names from the supplier spec and keep claims to what you can document.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bamboo T Shirts (FAQ)

What is a bamboo t shirt made of?

Usually rayon or viscose made from bamboo, sometimes blended with other fibers such as cotton, polyester or spandex. Check the fiber breakdown on the spec.

Can you screen print on bamboo shirts?

Yes, but test on the blank first, checking hand feel, stretch and wash results. Discharge only acts on cotton, so its results depend on the cotton share.

Can you sublimate on bamboo?

Not on rayon or viscose. Sublimation bonds to polyester, so it only makes sense if the blank has a high polyester share, and even then you should test.

Do bamboo shirts shrink?

Shrink varies by fiber blend, knit and finishing. Follow the care label and run a wash test on a sample before you quote sizes.

Can I call a shirt bamboo on the label?

General information, not legal advice: in the US the FTC says bamboo alone is only for fabric made directly from bamboo fiber, and rayon or viscose made from bamboo should be named as such. Other countries have their own rules, so check with the regulator or a qualified advisor.

Supplier note: fiber blends, finishes and decorating settings vary by mill, style and lot; treat this as general guidance and confirm every setting against the supplier spec sheet, the ink, film or printer maker instructions and the garment care label. Test on the actual blank.
