Heat Press Accessories: What Decorators Actually Need

Heat press accessories explained: pressing pillows, cover sheets, interchangeable platens, heat tape and alignment tools, and what to buy first.

Neutral accessory list by job: pillows, cover sheets, platens, tape and alignment aids, with buy first vs later notes.

The heat press accessories that matter most come first: beyond the press itself, most decorators rely on pressing pillows, cover sheets, heat tape and an alignment aid, and add interchangeable or threadable platens once they press sleeves, kids sizes, hats or hard to reach spots.

Rule block: buy what solves a job you run now. Pillows and cover sheets come first, tape and alignment aids next, extra platens when your mix needs them.

Heat Press Pillows and Pads

A pressing pillow or pad raises the print area above seams, zippers, buttons and collars so the platen presses the design evenly. Softer pillows conform to bulky spots; firmer pads give flatter support. They come in several sizes, including small ones for sleeves and kids wear. Uneven pressure over a seam is a common reason transfers lift; see Heat Transfers Not Sticking.

Cover Sheets: PTFE, Silicone and Parchment

Cover sheets protect the transfer and platen from adhesive and scorching. PTFE sheets are reusable and durable; silicone sheets and parchment paper are common for many transfer types and for finishing passes. Some transfer makers specify a sheet type, and a thick sheet can slightly reduce the heat reaching the transfer, so follow the transfer instructions and confirm with a test. For settings, see the Heat Press Temperature Chart.

Interchangeable and Threadable Platens

Interchangeable lower platens swap in for sleeves, youth sizes, pockets and other small areas. A threadable platen lets you slide the garment over the lower platen so only the target area is under heat, which helps with split fronts, sleeves and avoiding a second layer. Check which platens your press accepts. For placement sizes, see the T Shirt Print Placement Guide. For caps, see How to Heat Press Hats.

Heat Tape and Alignment Tools

Heat resistant tape holds transfers and sublimation sheets in place so they do not shift. Alignment aids, such as rulers, T squares and laser guides, keep placement consistent across an order. For vinyl specific tips, see the Heat Transfer Vinyl Guide.

Caring for Pillows, Pads and Cover Sheets

Wipe nonstick cover sheets and pad covers with a damp cloth once they are cool, and avoid scrubbing them with anything rough. Replace a cover sheet when it is torn, cracked or ripped, and replace a lower pad when the silicone breaks down or its edges wear round, because both cause uneven pressure. For the full cleaning routine, see How to Clean a Heat Press. If transfers still fail after the accessories check out, work through Heat Press Troubleshooting.

Frequently Asked Questions About Heat Press Accessories (FAQ)

What is a heat press pillow for?

It lifts the print area above seams, zippers and buttons so the platen applies even pressure across the design.

PTFE or nonstick cover sheet vs parchment paper?

Both are cover sheets. A reusable PTFE sheet is durable; parchment and silicone sheets are common for many transfers. Use the sheet your transfer instructions specify and test.

Do I need extra platens?

Only if you press sleeves, youth sizes, pockets or areas the standard platen cannot reach cleanly.

What can I use instead of a heat press pillow?

A folded cover sheet or a firm heat safe pad can lift a print area in a pinch, but a purpose made pillow gives more even, repeatable pressure.

Do cover sheets change press temperature?

They can slightly reduce the heat reaching the transfer, especially thicker sheets. Follow the transfer maker's instructions and test.
