Pima Cotton T Shirts: What Decorators Should Know

Pima cotton t shirts explained: extra long staple fiber, how it prints, how it compares with ring spun and upland cotton, and labeling basics.

Pima as extra-long staple cotton for decorators: fiber length, print surface, premium blank fit and labeling.

Pima cotton t shirts use extra long staple cotton, which spins into smoother, stronger yarn than many upland cottons; for decorators that usually means a smooth print surface and a premium hand, but price and ink behavior still need a test on the blank.

Definition: pima / extra long staple cotton

Pima refers to cotton of the Gossypium barbadense type that is classed as extra long staple (ELS). Industry fiber education places typical pima staple lengths longer than common upland cotton, which is why mills use it for finer, smoother yarns.

What Pima Cotton Is

Cotton variety education from industry and university sources describes pima as longer-staple cotton than typical upland. US references commonly put extra long staple pima at about 1 3/8 inches or longer, while upland usually runs shorter, often around 1 to 1 1/4 inches. Longer fibers support finer, more even yarns and a smoother fabric face when the mill processes them well.

This page does not claim a single growing region as exclusive, and it does not name private marketing programs or certification marks for ELS cotton. Fiber length and hand still vary by variety, ginning and finishing.

Printing on Pima Blanks

A smooth, fine jersey usually helps clean edges on screen and transfer work, but pima is still cotton chemistry. Use your normal cotton ink set, then test hand after a large print, wash durability and any specialty effect. Ring spun or combed pima blanks can feel different from carded upland at the same ounce weight; judge the blank, not the word on the hangtag alone.

When a Premium Blank Fits an Order

Choose pima when the buyer pays for a soft, smooth retail hand and will approve a higher blank cost. Choose a solid upland blank when budget, color range or inventory depth matter more. Quote the blank SKU in writing so purchasing does not substitute a cheaper cotton mid-run.

Labeling Claims

This is not legal advice. US textile labeling education allows truthful type names such as pima when the fiber content matches. If only part of the cotton is pima, disclose the share rather than implying the whole garment is pima. Branded extra long staple cotton programs also exist; check the blank spec and supplier documents for exactly what the label claims before you repeat it. Follow current rules and counsel for advertising and hangtags.

Premium cotton blanks still need the same receiving checks as any tee: shade lot, side-seam twist, neck recovery and residual shrink after a shop wash test. A smooth face helps print quality, but it will not hide a twisted body or an unstable rib.

When a buyer asks for a soft cotton, clarify whether they mean fiber length (pima / ELS), yarn process (ring spun, combed) or fabric finish. Those levers stack. Selling all three without checking inventory creates substitutions that feel wrong on press day.

For group orders, confirm colorways exist in the sizes you need. Premium lines sometimes skip extended sizes or limit heathers. Put availability on the quote before art is approved.

Importers sometimes use "pima" loosely. Require mill paperwork that matches the hangtag before you advertise the fiber. Your shop's reputation rides on that match more than on any brochure photo.

Screen printers often like pima faces for clean edges on fine type, then discover the blank costs wipe out the margin on a cheap event tee. Match the blank to the job class. Premium fiber on a one-day giveaway is usually the wrong spend.

Keep ELS language generic. If a marketing program or trademarked cotton name appears on a mill packet, do not copy it into your own marketing unless you have confirmed the right to use it. This guide sticks to extra long staple and pima as fiber terms.

Retail buyers sometimes equate pima with zero shrink. Correct that early. Cotton still moves; finishing and customer care drive the number you will see after wash.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pima Cotton T Shirts (FAQ)

What is pima cotton?

Extra long staple cotton from the barbadense species group, spun into smoother yarns than many upland cottons when processed for that purpose.

Is pima cotton better for printing?

It often gives a smooth face, but "better" depends on the job. Test the blank. Price and color range may favor upland for some runs.

Does pima cotton shrink?

It is still cotton. Wash-test the blank; finishing and knit structure drive shrink more than the marketing name.

Pima vs ring spun: what is the difference?

Pima is a fiber length / species story. Ring spun is how yarn is made. A blank can be one, both or neither in the way buyers use the words.

Can I label a shirt pima?

Only when the fiber content supports the claim. Partial pima needs a clear percentage story. Not legal advice.

Supplier note: figures here are hedged starting points that vary by garment, film, ink, blank, machine and method; confirm every setting against the supplier or manufacturer spec sheet, the garment care label and your own tests. Not legal advice. No trademarked ELS program names are used on this page.
