What Is a Ringer Tee? A Decorator's Guide

What a ringer tee is, how it differs from a standard tee, and how to plan ink colors and placements around contrast trims.

Ringer tees: contrast rib collar and cuffs. Plan ink and placement around the bands.

What is a ringer tee? A ringer tee is a t shirt with contrasting ribbed bands at the collar and sleeve cuffs; for decorators the trims add a second color to plan around, so match ink colors to the body and trim and check that placements clear the bands.

Key definition: solid jersey body plus separate contrast rib at neck and sleeve openings. The rings are the visual signature.

Customers sometimes call any two-tone tee a ringer. If the contrast is the whole sleeve (raglan) rather than a cuff band, it is not a ringer. Confirm on the blank photo and spec.

What Is a Ringer Tee? How It Is Built

Maker and glossary sources describe a short-sleeve jersey body with 1x1 or similar rib knit applied at the crew neck and sleeve openings in a contrasting color. The rib needs stretch and recovery so the neck opens and returns. Coverstitch or bound seams commonly finish those joins. Body fabric weight and stitch length still follow ordinary tee construction; the rings are the add-on.

Design and Ink Color With Contrast Trim

The trim is already a second color on the blank. Decide whether the print should match the rings, match the body, or introduce a third spot color. Matching the ring color ties the shirt together; contrasting the print against both body and rings can look busy if values are close. On dark bodies with light rings, underbase plans still follow normal dark-shirt rules for the printed area.

Vintage and team looks often use simple one-color chest marks so the rings stay the hero. Crowded full fronts can visually collide with bold collar bands in photos.

Print Placement Around Bands

Measure from the collar band down, not from an imaginary neckline on a flat sketch. Left chest and full front placements should clear the collar rib so ink does not sit on the stretchy band where cracking and misregistration show. Sleeve prints must clear the cuff ring. Use the placement guide for starting distances, then adjust for the blank's band height.

On automatic presses, confirm the shirt boards are not stretching the collar ring into the print area. Manual printers should smooth the rib flat away from the design before locking the screen.

Ordering Ringer Blanks

  1. Specify body color and trim color as two fields on the PO.
  2. Ask for the weight, fit and whether rings are cotton, cotton/poly or another rib.
  3. Order a sample to check band height and stretch before a large event run.
  4. Measure using the same method as other tees; see the measure guide. Do not assume ringer sizing matches a fashion baby tee or oversized blank.
  5. Quote decoration only after you know ring colors so ink callouts are honest.

Stock both common body/trim pairings your market buys, and photograph them with a one-color left chest so sales can show how ink interacts with rings before the customer guesses from a blank flat lay.

Size runs on ringers should include a try-on of the collar stretch, not only the chest print. A body that fits can still feel wrong if the rib is tight or loose compared with the wearer’s usual crew neck.

For screen shops, add a collar-clear zone to the art template used for ringers. The same template that works on a plain crew can place ink on the rib if nobody checks the trim height.

When customers ask for a distressed vintage look, print the graphic soft and let the rings carry the retro cue. Heavy crackle ink plus loud trim can read as busy instead of classic.

Vintage programs love ringers because the trim does design work before ink hits the shirt. Keep the print simple enough that the rings remain visible in group photos, especially on dark bodies with bright collars.

If a customer sends art that overlaps the collar band on the mockup, push the design down or shrink it before screens are burned. Fixing band collisions after a press run costs more than a proof change.

Rib recovery matters for wearers who stretch the neck. If a sample collar stays distorted after a pull test, note it before you sell a fashion-critical run, even when the print plan is perfect.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ringer Tees (FAQ)

What is a ringer tee?

A t shirt with contrasting ribbed collar and sleeve cuff bands on a solid body.

What is the difference between a ringer tee and a regular tee?

A regular crew usually has matching collar rib and no contrast cuff rings. A ringer adds those contrast bands as a design feature.

Can you screen print on ringer tees?

Yes. Print on the body panels and keep art clear of the stretchy rings unless a specialty technique is planned and tested.

How should I pick ink colors for a ringer?

Sample against both body and trim. Matching the ring color or choosing a strong contrast that still clears both are common approaches.

Are ringer tees sized differently?

Sizing follows each blank's chart. Measure a sample; do not assume they match another style's numbers.

Supplier note: figures and settings here are hedged starting points that vary by film, ink, blank and maker; confirm every claim against the supplier or manufacturer spec sheet, the SDS where relevant, and the garment care label. Band height and rib content vary by blank; confirm on the spec and a physical sample.
