How to Sublimate Hats: Blanks, Patches and Step by Step

How to sublimate hats: which blanks work, direct front vs patches, step by step pressing, settings guidance and ghosting fixes.

Which hats can be sublimated, direct front vs patches, a trucker hat walkthrough, settings ranges and ghosting fixes.

How to sublimate hats: use a hat with a white or light polyester front panel or a polyester sublimation patch, tape a mirrored print in place so it cannot shift, and press on a hat press or curved platen with a pillow at the blank maker settings; published starting points for polyester caps commonly sit around 380 to 400°F for roughly 45 to 60 seconds.

Rule block: sublimation on a hat = light polyester surface + secured transfer + even pressure on a curved front. Missing any one shows up as faded, blurred or patchy prints.

How to Sublimate Hats: Which Hats Work

Sublimation needs polyester or a polyester coating in a white or light color, so the hat front must be polyester and light. Polyester front trucker caps with mesh backs, polyester baseball caps and polyester bucket hats are common choices. Cotton, wool and dark fronts do not take sublimation directly. The fiber percentage rule is covered on Sublimation on Cotton.

Foam front trucker caps can warp or shrink at standard polyester settings, so follow that blank maker settings closely and test one cap first.

How to Sublimate a Trucker Hat Step by Step

  1. Confirm the cap is a sublimation blank with a white or light polyester front, and read the blank maker settings.
  2. Print the design mirrored on sublimation paper, sized to the front panel and avoiding the seams where possible.
  3. Pre-press the empty cap briefly to remove moisture and smooth the front.
  4. Fit the cap snugly on the hat platen or over a pillow so the whole front gets even contact.
  5. Place the print face down and secure every edge with heat resistant tape so it cannot shift.
  6. Press at the blank maker time, temperature and pressure.
  7. Remove the paper right away as the maker directs, keeping it from sliding across the print.
  8. Let the cap cool and check color and edges before pressing the rest of the run.

Time, Temperature and Pressure for Sublimating Hats

Follow the blank maker spec first. Published starting points for polyester caps commonly fall around 380 to 400°F (about 190 to 200°C) for roughly 45 to 60 seconds with medium to firm pressure. Foam fronts, thin fabrics and coated blanks usually need lower settings from their maker. Test one hat whenever you change blanks.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sublimating Hats (FAQ)

Can you sublimate any hat?

No. The surface must be white or light polyester or polyester coated. Cotton, wool and dark hats need a sublimated polyester patch or a different method.

How do you sublimate a trucker hat?

Use a polyester front sublimation trucker blank, print mirrored, pre-press, fit the cap snugly on a hat platen or pillow, tape the print, and press at the blank maker settings, commonly around 380 to 400°F for roughly 45 to 60 seconds on polyester fronts.

Can you sublimate on black hats?

Not directly. Sublimation dye is transparent and there is no white ink, so a black front will hide the image. Use a white polyester sublimation patch on the black hat instead.

Do I need a hat press for sublimation?

A hat press or curved hat platen makes even pressure on the front much easier. Some decorators press flat or soft fronts on a flat press with a pillow, but structured caps usually need curved tooling. Press choice is covered on How to Heat Press Hats.

How do sublimation hat patches work?

You sublimate a flat white polyester patch on a regular press, then attach it to the hat with a heat applied adhesive backing, glue or stitching. It lets you decorate hats that cannot be sublimated directly.
